Mongolia is still one of the most pristine countries in all of Asia, if not the world.  Sadly, it is now facing an environmental crisis that threatens most of its countryside. An already dire situation is made all the more serious because Mongolia is a landlocked, arid country, with a severe continental climate and a very fragile environment.  Some of the more drastic problems now stretch well beyond Mongolia’s borders, affecting nearby ecosystems.

In recent years, changes in local climate and the desertification of the Gobi Desert have shown that the problems Mongolia faces are no longer regional, but often global in nature. For example, not long ago California was affected by a yellow dust storm that originated in the Gobi Desert, drifted across China, Korea and Japan, and then eventually reached the United States.

Join Our Expedition in August!

This coming August, our MEC will be organizing an expedition to explore the land of Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan). The purpose of this trip is to start us on our quest, and help us find ways to promote cooperation and involvement of the international community in environmental conservation work in Mongolia. We cannot stand alone in our work to preserve the environment and cultural heritage of Mongolia. It will only be through cooperation with all sectors of society that we will be able to ensure a sustainable future where best practices are the rule rather than the exception. Read more >
Support our Environmental Leadership Program commencing in August!

Our MEC Environmental Leadership Program encourages, fosters and supports environmental leadership in Mongolian society. The program’s strong interdisciplinary approach ensures that its graduates have an understanding of Mongolia’s traditional approaches to protecting nature. It also provides them with the necessary skills to practice independent evaluation and assessment of environmental problems, not only at a local level, but also at a national, regional, and global scale. Finally, it teaches them to appreciate the role of cooperation in resolving these problems. Read more >
